The in-depth portraits that Eliot paints of the characters are incredible. I have just gotten past the part about the Vichy's and Mr Featherstone and that was a marvelous chapter. I will begin Book 2 on my next read.

I just finished the decently long chapter in which Eliot explains Lydgate's backstory regarding his becoming a doctor and a folly which lead to his now-scientific analysis of women. What I gleaned from that chapter is that Eliot is a true master of psychology. You know these characters. I have never seen an author go so in-depth into peoples' psyches before.

"Dorothea knew of no one who thought as she did about life and its best objects." Thoroughly enjoying this so far. The dynamic between sisters D and C seems entrenched in a loving realism and D is not afraid to speak her mind. I can certainly see how this was revolutionary at the time! Mr Brooks is also interesting, maybe a conduit between the old and new-fashioned ways of men's views on women.
