We make an illegal bargain for magic to save our dying sister, immediately sold out by the guy and throw into prison, only to be taken out and forced to compete as the only commoner in an event to win the prince’s hand in marriage, who by the way, is the guy who gave us the magic (I’m assuming). That makes sense.
