Beautifully written tale of generational hauntings in a Massachusetts forest, the North Woods of the title. The different ways in which the cast of many characters occupy the land is intriguing and thoughtful, but it's really the lyrical sweep of Mason's language that puts you in the book. Also, the gothic aspect is very subtle as it only grows into perspective near the rather disturbing ending.
