Background on materialism as a whole and its origins in England (Bacon, Hobbes, Locke) resulting in a worldview that favoured science over religion. The burgeoisie was a beneficiary of this development and used science to find more efficient ways of production. The burgeoisie realised soon, that the working people were not as happy. Religion became a norm again (in England) to keep the workers from rebelling.
