I found myself pushing through pages that seemed to say very little despite using a lot of words.
There are interesting themes here: identity, religion, race, guilt, and the decay of the American South but they were buried under a narrative that constantly interrupted its own momentum. Every time the story became engaging, it drifted back into lengthy introspection.
