I'm wondering if this might be a book more suited for MG than YA based on the kind of story it is. It might appeal to those in that age group. Still reading, and I'm noting the progression as fairly slice of life.

Yeah, I can definitely say this seems more like an MG novel. It's actually cute, though I think it has a few caveats.

A lot of telling more than showing of emotions for the moment, and I'm about three chapters in. Shayla's already attracted the attention of the popular clique, and has befriended an outcast boy. Still reading.

Not bad so far, just a bit past the first chapter and we have the intros of two MCs. I'm not sure how fast I'll go through this yet. It seems like a typical new kid story, with Shayla trying to hide her physical and magical differences.
