A journalistic masterpiece if not a historical one. If you dropped a modern day columnist for The New Yorker back in the Soviet Union from 1988-92 to write about the USSR like they would about life in the US, this would basically be it since Remnick is still more or less the same author now as then. The only thing that gives it away is that all the cultural references are from the 90s.
