“I had anticipated a kind of elegant house with guns in the windows; an orderly set of men… floating around like Noah’s ark. Instead the deck was dirty, slippery and wet; the smells abominable; the whole sight disgusting; and when I remarked the slovenly attire of the midshipmen, dressed in shabby round jackets, glazed hats, no gloves, and some without shoes, I forgot all the glory… and cried like a child”

Most of the seamen had eventually starved to death.” – Spanish Armada

“A British captain who passed by the island nearly a century later noted how the fierce squalls beat down from the ever-present clouds that engulfed the surrounding lonely heights, and called it a place where “the soul of man dies in him.” - the ship finally crashed near some stone and shrubs island of a Chilean coast.. wet, cold, hungry, sick, crazy, in winter…

“As Samuel Johnson once observed, “No man will be a sailor who has contrivance enough to get himself into a jail; for being in a ship is being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned.” — logical that it’s also easy to earn while being unattainable (roaming in the mid of nowhere)
