This novel is autobiographical. I find the author's pompous personality a bit hard to take.
The sentences are long and contain many layers of clauses, but I can parse it clearly enough and find it disarmingly conversational. When I can't figure out what he means, I really don't know whether it's my comprehension skills or plain old bad grammar.
I might write about his prejudiced and hierarchical worldview later.
