In the regional Carolina Algonquian language, "mantoac" (or montoac) is the plural word for "gods" or "spirits."When the English scientist Thomas Harriot recorded the local culture in 1585, he noted that the local tribes believed in a plurality of spirits and minor deities which they called mantoac.
