Ok, looks like the huntsman thinks he failed to save a kid in the past and that's possibly why he retired. I'm assuming our MC is that kid and he actually survived.

It would also explain the title and cover art. His body is probably partially "dead", leaving him living on the boundary between the two worlds.

And the message is likely not instructions, it's probably more of a warning...

Seems pretty clear the "inept" wizard has some sort of dangerous hidden power and that is why he was disbarred. Obviously this power is also what makes him important.

The otherworld was interestingly presented. The concept of masks was also intriguing. That being said, magicians are literally time bombs. What kind of idiot would hire them as a kids entertainer?
