The descriptions of milieu are sparing but so straightforward and matter-of-fact in their metaphors and similes. It makes you believe that when she says the snowcaps on the mountains are claws that scratch at the stone-colored sky, the snowy peaks are actually sharp and stark as claws that pull down the resolute stony sky or at least desecrate it with their raper edge.
