The pacing and time-jumping of this book is SO difficult. Still, I find the mental gymnastics really exciting and I'm so eager to find out what happened in the History House. The way it is dealing with generational trauma and the effects of the colonialism is just blowing my mind. Luckily, I've found a website which analyses this book section by section which means I'm not missing anything despite reading casually.

The Orangedrink Lemondrink man scene made me sick - goes to show how amazing the writing is. Roy captures such a delicate, traumatic experience without it seeming sensational. I love the theme of the watch; time standing still; tradition in Ayemenem. Also the moth (fear, ager) and old roses (whose backstory I don't know). I'm gripped, and (white perspective) feel accountable, privileged, and responsible.

I am confused. I know I'm being made to be confused on purpose though, and I'm itching to know more. I love the way Roy writes - text is thick with metaphor and contrasts and comparison. She really makes you work for it. What I know so far: Baby Kochamma is somehow a villain, old roses are important, and the book compares "small things" (on a familial level) with "big things" (politics, history and social upheaval).
