The writing hasn't improved but at least it makes for a quick read. Normally I might DNF but the story is mildly interesting and I'm doing this for a challenge anyway so I might as well finish it. Figured out that the writing isn't clinical, it's just very telling. "X did this. Then they did this. "oh!" they thought" etc etc. I have no clue how this got marketed as YA when it's clearly middle grade level.
