Once again Kafka speaks of a stale, suffocating air, something he felt many times in his life.

I like the duality with which K is presented, when he says he'll need some sweets to win over some unruly children or a stick to drag them around. This could be an allusion to Kafka's harsh childhood with his father and a reflection of the aggressive upbringing of that time.

I'm amazed at how Kafka manages to convey the unsettling feeling of something being "out of control" through his descriptions. The captain takes an action, and the characters, immersed in a claustrophobic atmosphere, jump in terror.
