Initially was really hard for me to visualize what the fuck they’re doing. But basically they created a makeshift airlock by welding some tunnel material. Then cutting a hole in the wall (but there’s two hulls and a bunch of crushed rock in between) to get inside the factory where the smelter is without getting noticed. I feel like all the noise would get people’s attention though??

She successfully welds steel to the smelter. I think they’re trying to make it overheat and blow up? She meets back up with Dale and they’re starting to leave when she turns back and sees Loretta Sanchez in a mask and goggles. She didn’t evacuate. She’ll die when the smelter blows up. Jazz is going to save her probs? Ends chapter 14 on a cliffhanger sort of

Funny parts!

“Don’t forget your breather mask,” said Dad. “I know, I know.” I’d completely forgotten.

Jazz released chlorine gas to evacuate all the workers out the factory. Duct taped her goggles and mask to make it an air tight seal. “So now I was a mud-covered freak with random shit taped to my face.”

Cool system

“If there's a breach in the outer hull, the compartment's air will leak out to the vacuum outside. But if there's a breach in the inner hull, the compartment will be flooded with higher-pressure air from inside the bubble. It's an elegant system. If the compartment pressure goes down, you know there's a leak in the outer hull. If it goes up, you know there's a leak in the inner hull.”

Dale calls Jazz a “pedantic little shit”

Pedantic — excessively concerned with minor details or rules

“Tomorrow, his daughter's life would rely on the quality of these welds. It slowly dawned on me that, to him, this was the most critical project he'd ever done. He would accept nothing short of his absolute best. And if that meant taking all day, so be it.

The job should have taken forty-five minutes, but Dad spent three and a half hours on it. My father loves me 366 percent more than he loves anything else.”

Jazz crashed at Svoboda’s, aw. He def likes her. He gave her the bed! She rounds up the gang: dad, Dale, Bob, Svoboda, and Lene Landvik. She wants Lene to take over Sanchez Aluminum after Jazz stops the oxygen production. It won’t be profitable anymore so the mobsters will want out (but ZAFO is so profitable so this doesn’t really make sense). They agree so their home doesn’t degenerate into syndicate rule

“Once O Palácio sets up their own glass factory, they'll have both production and supply line locked down. And of course, they'll kill anyone who tries to get in their way.”

Remember the glass factory explosion near the beginning of the book, yup. That was them

“The city's future was at stake. A criminal syndicate was about to control the most important resource on the moon. Trond offered me a solution: He'd take over the contract, but with six-month renewals.“

Then Jin Chu sold this info to O Palácio (Sanchez people) and “All of a sudden, their insignificant money-laundering company was poised to corner an emerging billion-dollar industry.”

"Interesting how economics works, isn't it? Within a year, aluminum will be a by-product of the silicon industry. And that aluminum will be handy too. We'll have a lot of construction to handle the growth we're about to have."

I have to start thinking about investing like this. What are up and coming products and industries and what raw materials are needed to manufacture them

We find out bc Jazz is like “interesting that you only mention parts of industry that rely on fibre optics” and Ngugi agrees bc that’s what they’re talking about but Jazz says “except I haven’t brought up fibre optics yet.” EXCEPT SHE LITERALLY DID IN HER HYPOTHETICAL.

Exhibit A: “Lets say someone invented a better mousetrap. A really awesome fibre optic cable.”

Is this an Andy Weir slip up?
