he memoir aspect of this is uninteresting and insubstantial, and too much of the sections that should be focussed on actual art history or criticism verge into auto theory(or basically, the author just interrupting her book to talk about herself all the time) in a way that leaves a bad taste in my mouth

also at one point she includes a quote from “ a friend who has a phd in magic lamps” (???????) and then simply says “i’m stilll thinking about what that means” with no further elaboration. jennifer, you’re the one writing the book! why put it in if you have nothing to say about it! or like, take a minute to work through the idea and reflect on it? since you’re, you know, WRITING A BOOK? and reflecting on ideas???

also so many sentences she writes just, on their own, have NOTHING to say. like this, describing hildegard of bingen: “for women, in particular, so much begins with this medieval mystic: she raised her voice and owned her power when everything conspired to silence both.” huh?? btw she has not at this point done anything to explain how HoB “owned her power” much less what ‘much’ beginning for women is supposed to mean
