Really interesting the extent to which Clancy’s understanding of the Soviet leadership is shaped by his perception of Andropov (particularly as KGB chief) and immediate post-Andropov developments. It’s like how From Russia with Love’s picture of the Soviets is shaped by distrust of Thaw/no one in Western intelligence knowing what was going on in the wake of the death of Stalin.
