it feels really fucked up to say this about someone’s memoir but this is def not meeting my expectations

“I could not be myself because I believed my self—my authentic, complex, multitudes-containing self—was something my parents could not see or comprehend. I wanted to feel seen and known, and I felt I couldn't get that from my parents. I felt they didn't know me at all. Not the real me.
