guys I don't know if I can do this, he's just so hateful. can't we find some positivity to cut through all the scornful observation, actually I don't think we need to do so much observation at all. too much observing...sometimes noticing things is just noticing and does not profundity make. someday the cultural pendulum will swing back to contempt for this kind of crap, I look forward to it and I stand with oprah.

this trickery of sneering observations directed at the entire world will NOT work on me because this week alone I read three different books about unhappy, messed up people living lives of relative privilege and making fun of the other unhappy people around them (compass, fixer chao, darryl) and all of them were full of keenly observed snark and none of them were straight up mean like this

it’s called “envy” in Granta from 2003. now that's observation!! I just reread it and it's definitely better than this stupid book. (ironically or not this remains her most-read work as far as I can tell.)

i vividly remember reading a taffy brodesser akner profile of jf that dropped while i was in college, fascinating followup to that 2003 essay by his wife - the appearance the wife makes in the taffy profile is truly a disturbing most horrific horror of a 15-year update. one of my main takeaways reading this book right now is that taffy's recent novel the long island compromise, which i liked, is not simply influenced by the corrections but is in most ways a literal plagiaristic rewriting, hm. all of which, extremely interesting context for reading the profile now....it's all just too delicious. i want what he has, want to rescue kathy from the evil sunny skies of northern california, i can't look away....
