Just like Winter Rose, the movement from three central locations and visitations and pacing will irk many. To me? It was initially felt "okay" but then very quickly did it become incredible. I am astounded that this is McKillip's first book. McKillip should have been there on the podium right next to Pratchett, Beagle, and dare I say--Le Guin.

This was initially just "okay" and then very suddenly it veered into being able to viscerally fill me with a dread and sadness and terror that I have not been able to experience since reading Swamplandia! or Fire & Hemlock. Incredible work. McKillip does it again and again and again.
