This is one of those thoroughly exhaustive texts that feel over burdened with detail, but have something interesting just waiting the next paragraph. Very interested to read about how electric light was used in workplaces and how it stimulated entirely new fields.... but also how many people were electrocuted and fires started by uninsulated cables.

Valerie Book Valkyrie Sounds illuminating, is it an LFL find?

No, this one's an ebook. My LFL may be cool, but it doesn't normally materialise texts like this one. 😎💡

Margo Laurie Interesting to read your thoughts on this one, Berengaria. 💚 I bought it on impulse years ago because of the beautiful cover & never quite got into it, but always felt I should give it another try.

It's quite exhaustive in the details and not everybody is going to be riveted by, say, an in-depth chapter on how the US patent office worked in the 19th century, that's for sure.

But! One thing it is doing that most tomes like this don't, is give you a real FEEL for what it was like to go from gas lighting to electricity.

The details and eyewitness accounts are a treasure trove for writers! For example, I didn't know that nightlife was rather curtailed with gas light because not only did indoor gas lamps give off an unpleasant smell, but they could also give you a "hangover" the next day due to oxygen deprivation/CO2 inhalation.

That's fantastic sensory info for fiction!
