An amazing number of the guys in this book who lived through World War II got jobs as postal carriers after the war! And most of them worked for 30 or more years. And as the book comes to a conclusion more and more of them are in there late 80s. Thus the book ends! Us baby boomers, who were born when they all came home from the war are amazed to live in the world with no more WW2 veterans.

This book is filled with individual years after the fact recollections. As such they give an interesting point of view of being in a battle often at a fixed point. Not much overview of what was happening, but just the daily experiences of being in a shooting war where people are killed in plain sight pretty routinely. Away from the gunfire, the recollections are pretty unemotional.
