"There!" said Merry. "You have left the Shire, and are now outside, and on the edge of the Old Forest."

Malicious old trees... made for some pretty scenes that I could draw in the margins though. And now we meet Tom Bombadil! He's new to me, but Micah used to tell me about him.

"Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We'll wander back to home and bed."
I can't believe I'm already through the original book 1. I must say I am OBSESSED with the poetry and songs, and with marking up the book as I read... it's been quite pleasant.

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment."

So far, I'm enjoying this way more than others before me anticipated. There's also a much greater emphasis on Gollum... a very strong sense of pity in Gandalf that wasn't in the movies.

Thus begins a long and arduous journey that I have awaited for many years... someday soon, I shall have finally read this classic.
