Her books sound so interesting. I only read Station Eleven so far and found it entertaining but too simplistic, more like YA literature. The first pages of Sea of Tranquility sound like that again. An 18yr old descendant of Earls sent to Canada after a petty and highly unlikely rebellion at dinner table gets expedited immediately to exile in Canada. Living then on his remittance and meeting peers repeatedly. Hmmm.

Station Eleven was about the post-apocalypse caused by a pandemic. Sea of Tranquility was written during Covid-19 and expands on the experience, using it as the watershed event to epitomize the conflict between humanity and time travel in Mandel's conception. If she just for once wouldn't go for the simplest solution. Stays within the bounds of well-done genre literature.

Mandel goes Mitchell. Characters and topics from her previous books reappear. The ponzi scheme, the pandemic. Also, the episodes stand on their own at first, only loosely linked like Mitchell does.
The characters are weak and while entertaining to read, it's a bit flat.
