This has bursts of moments when it gets intense and interesting, while other moments feel so dragged out. It took until p.400 for me to finally feel like something interesting is happening.

Every interaction with a white guy ends traumatically. Sure, not uncommon place in 1830s, but as a work of fiction, does every white guy need to be devil incarnate? It's getting a bit boring watching these characters get routinely victimised by this 'white guy bad' pattern.
