book 1 was so good, started off strong. rufus was the most interesting character in this portion, i hope we get to learn more about him. baldwin does such an incredible job of capturing the complexities of gendered and racial dynamics in the relationships within a single group of people. makes you think about every relationship in your life and the intricacies we aren’t always aware of. beautiful and heartbreaking

not that it should be a surprise but i’m always blown away by how beautifully james baldwin wrote. it’s nearly impossible for me to sit down and read anything he writes without ending up crying.
