How does this compare to the last one you read? Should I read both?

Holli, they're both thoroughly researched and very well written. The authors navigated sometimes conflicting firsthand reports, and published 40 years apart. The previous book was Lansing's magnum opus, while Alexander has published multiple history books, as well as a new translation of the Iliad. Lansing's print book is approximately twice as long as Alexander's and contains more detail. He was able to personally interview 5 of the surviving men. Alexander seems to me to have a wider perspective, including revealing some of the editing the expedition members did when they related their ordeal later. She also includes more of an epilogue, while Lansing has no epilogue. I found both of them gripping and will re-read both. There are abridged audiobooks of both. I found one unabridged audiobook of Lansing, narrated by Simon Prebble, which is how I read it. The audiobook of Alexander is only slightly abridged; the print book contains multiple expedition photos. My public library has two print versions of Lansing, one with photos and one without.
