"It was sometimes like looking at the kindling for a life, a meticulously laid
fire that was cold, unlit. The possibility was there, the elements properly
arranged, but he couldn’t make it spark."

"He took his time making the loops of his name. A
ribbon of blue ink that linked each letter to the next.
David Hastings. Shaky but complete.
David Was Here.
Mostly. Sometimes"

''Little Nemo is falling soundlessly through the
void. Little Nemo in his nightdress, dropping through the stars. He was
bracing himself for impact and it didn’t come, and it was so much worse,
David said, to keep expecting it than it would be to just get it over with.''

''What will it be like when you’re gone?
It will be pretty much the same as before you got here.''

''The women had not quite persisted. None of them. Most of their names
were gone. The men, the few men—he had not wanted to know their names.''

WAIT HES BI?????????
Starting to think the 'friend' who keep haunting the narrative is more than that!!! This book could be a 5 star for me. Cline's prose is hympnotic- I can't stop reading.

I think this one will win. I'd bet all my money on it

''Now they knew too much. What was in the drinking water. What was in the
soil. What alcohol did to the brain and body. How it should be between men
and women. And all this progress would continue after David was gone,
this relentless march of knowledge, this breaking down of the world.''

"Follow this
equation, they said. Don’t look away from my hand. Not even for a
moment. Scribble, scribble, solve for x, scribble, scribble—don’t forget,
they said, to show your work.
Then suddenly they erased it all in a haze of dust.
That was meaningless, they said. All of that was nonsense. Now just sit
there, breathe in and out. Now learn that everything—oh, just everything—
disintegrates."

When had David’s interest tipped so firmly toward the past? The present
was drained, a holding place, while the past retained its glow.
He was both here and not here.

A chronic timidness, really.
So you remembered them more. The few times something had actually
broken through—oh, oh. The moments you would later identify as
happiness. The mercy of another person’s body delivering you to yourself.
A young man who still existed, there in a faraway, long-gone year. His face
still bright and clear.

"Many experiences for the human body that he would not have. Like
walking a very long distance. Like learning a physical skill. He had gone in
water but not as often as he should have."
