Great introduction, and excellent stories. I can see why Lawrence was interested in Verga. Funny to read him slagging off Joyce and Tolstoy. Also quite funny to see the Midlands dialect and other Englishisms creep in in some of the dialogue (I'll show that bitch summat!; look sharp; I'll lay thee out!). La Lupa is fantastic.
