The general's son spoke slow and beautiful French and it clearly gave him great pleasure to hear himself, for he kept his eyes half closed and smiled as he spoke, as if listening to beloved music.

Talking of others, old men talk about themselves, studying their image in vanished mirrors.

The day was uncommonly hot for autumn. Rich shafts of sunlight poured on to the representational carpet, and the dust-specks played in them like tiny tropical fish.

Soon the gloom of the place seemed to work itself into the fabric of his face, like dust into the complexion of a prisoner.

Excited to see what you think of this one, Ilse."Vanitha, I was so happy I was gifted this second part of the trilogy since the local library doesn't have a copy - it's a joy to be able to continue and discover what happened to the Circus after its collapse and its further actions. Like the first part, it takes a while to flesh out some of the new characters, but it helps a great deal to find some of the ones we are already familiar with again too - I hope you will enjoy this part too when you will get to it!

Wonderful! I wish I had someone who gifted me books :) I trust your judgment, and I’ll go into these books knowing they’re going to be great. Happy reading!
Vit wrote: "I think this one is more into psychology. I enjoyed the book so much. Glad you’re reading it."Le Carré draws the reader unnervingly into the minds of the characters, their anxiety, the stress - I loved how you nailed it as 'All’s fair in love and espionage', Vit - spot on!

Happy reading!Thank you very much, Vanitha! Yes, I am lucky with the books, my partner is very good in picking just the right books for me :). Making progress in this one, it is still a compelling read, but it seems to contain far more shocking violence and gruesome descriptions than 'Tinker Tailor' - and while the 'honourable schoolboy' himself is not portrayed as a racist, the novel casually reflects some dated stereotypes of the time it was written (late 1970s).
