I’ve noticed that the change from present day to 1850s also creates a slight change in genre. In particular, chapter 19 is feeling quite victorian gothic with its blustery cliff faces, dead mother, and Sybil’s jealousy of Cristabel’s presence in the house.

officially halfway through!
still enjoying it, but the frequency of long chapters of solely letters or poems makes me feel like i’m still at the start of the book. whilst I’ve learnt a lot about Ashe and LaMott’s affair, I’ve also learnt far too much about sea anemone physiology.
my favourite insert so far has been LaMott’s story about the boy choosing the spider woman

I feel like i’m reading 3 separate books which is fun. The blend of poetry, prose, and narrative keep you engaged and Samuel West’s narration is perfect.
