Just can't put it down

Each book in the series is better than the last.

I love Olav's emotional back-and-forth regarding his memories of Ingunn, how one minute he looms back with fondness and holiness and appreciation then after the dance reminds him of his youth he feels resentment at the life he lived with her in their marriage. It feels very realistic to have a non-linear growth like this.

I was kind of dreading the London section because the idea did not appeal to me, I'm more interested in the complexities of the relationships back in Hestviken. But Sigrid Undset's a master: it's a beautiful, mesmerizing, interesting read. I like the descriptions of Scottish rebels' heads on pikes, the Knights Templar.
