The first chapter or so was pretty insufferable American exceptionalist self indulgence, but it progressed past this wankery it has turned into an incredibly enjoyable and well written account of the high politics of the early republic. The author seems under the impression this encapsulates all that is important about the period tho which is a bit disconcerting for something written in 2008 rather than 1950.
