I like how fast this is going but I wished there was more character work. Someone dear to Maya is revealed to be something else and there's no time dedicated (yet) to her processing what happened. She's shown to be reluctant to leave the normalcy of her life but her love of her job, academe and teaching, wasn't established well.
Also Aga is just kinda there to save and help her.

- Some awkward dialogue where worldbuilding had to be shoehorned in. Has a lot to explain on how the magic resisted (or didn't) against the colonizers of the Seven Islands. The term "Islander" is weird unless this are the only islands in the world.
- Banter about procrastination and teacher's pet allegations is cute...when you're in high school, not when you're both teaching/research assistants already.
