Even after taking a plethora of US history courses in school, I still have learned so much from just the first few chapters of this book. It's taken a subject that has been etched in marble and freed it from the stone to be examined anew. So far I find the South's antebellum situation more sympathetic and yet more ignominious than I had previously imagined.
