I’m not even halfway through, but this novel is by far the best social novel I’ve read — better than Dos Passos, Dreiser, even Sinclair.
Rosario Castellanos knows how to make her characters real: These are not wooden social archetypes. They’re all flawed people; even the most principled characters have real shortcomings.
And I love the pacing too. It’s a slow burn. But the tension is rising.
