Death, as narrator, describes a setting of pity: German citizens crammed into a concrete basement—a makeshift shelter—all holding hands and wiping the tears of children. Air raid sirens lead them there. Death remarks pity but only some, as he remarks the souls he took from washrooms in camps. For them he holds more pity, for at the least the Germans "have a chance for life."

I wonder what it would be like to live in Nazi Germany, where this book takes place. To be surrounded by fascism. Where minorities are blamed for the country's problems; where men in uniforms question and take people away; and where a loud and stupid voice blares its idiocracy as he allows for hate among people. 😒
