The story switches between the current day and events of 1,000 years ago - I'm expecting the two will come together at some point. The linguistic differences in the languages used in the book play an interesting role when it comes to expression of gender, respect, meaning, etc. I'm also slowly figuring out what exactly an ancilliary is in physical terms - some kind of central brain with multiple bodies?
