The phrases that the protagonist utters about "I have no right to exist" are very much in line with Sartre's thinking, that man is simply born and is defined by his choices.

The protagonist explores the hurried and curious characters he encounters on the sidewalk: a father with his son, an embarrassed painter, and so on. This, (in my opinion), is Sartre trying to reflect the almost violent flow of the bourgeoisie in some streets, and how deserted some of the poorer ones are.

Despite the protagonist's antipathy, he's capable of laughing at absurd things, like a pesticide shop next to the most expensive church in France. This makes the character more realistic, less of a pathetic figure, and a truly flesh-and-blood man.
