This book is absolutely, positively weird. Clearly very outdated (published in 1977) and it shows. Masterton’s descriptions of women are downright misogynistic, graphic, and uncomfortable to read about.
The language at points of the book are eyebrow raising to say the least.

The subplots are freaking me out. The former actor is getting blackmailed into becoming a political figurehead by being threatened. They’re threatening to kidnap and castrate his love, Nicky. 😨
What the heck am I reading??

I’m a fan of the concept of a plague going around and slowly overtaking a city. That aspect really reels me in. But some of the sub POVs have me grimacing. Specifically the ones regarding relationships and view on women. I don’t want to read about relations with step daughters or former actors fighting with their lovers.
