Being an alienated child in a small, parochial area isn't any different from living in a hell hole. Bellegueule's parents, while not providing him any support, also makes his life more difficult than it already is. I feel validated to see someone describe how boys' bullying, though not as severe from an outsider's perspective, could carve itself into your psyche and smother your childhood whole.
