Wolfe criticizes Ray Ortlund and Russell Moore for celebrating the death of cultural Christianity. I find myself somewhat between Wolfe and Moore. I want two things to be true: (1) the church is as much as possible filled with regenerate believers, and (2) common grace is something to be thankful for. But the church's mission is not cultural socialization, I agree with Moore on that.

"Violence cannot itself advance Christ's kingdom. Indeed, this is the very reason why his kingdom is not of this world. But violence can be used to secure it indirectly and outwardly... the church in itself does not increase by any earthly force, for its power spiritual, but earthly forces can preserve an indirectly advance that Kingdom by confronting and eliminating outward threats to it."

Dangerous fine line here

The Christian prince "Has the power to call synods in order to resolve doctrinal conflicts and to moderate the proceedings. Following the proceedings, he can confirm or deny their theological judgments: and in confirming them, they become the settled doctrine of the land."

Yeah this always works out well

"I envision a measured and theocratic Caeserism"

"The Prince holds the most excellent office, exceeding even that of the church minister, for it is most like God... he is the closest image of God on earth... he does not and cannot mediate salvific Grace... nevertheless he is an instrument for eternal life, for one looks more to the prince for his good than even Church ministers"

"Paedobaptism is the position most natural to Christian Nationalism... When the body politic are baptized, all are people of God... credobaptism likely creates problems for Christian Nationalism... Paedobaptism is consistent with CN theology because it makes possible a society that is baptized in infancy and thus is subject to Christian demands for all of life."

Not. At. All. Suprised.

Proud to be a Baptist

"Unity in Christ does not entail or provide unity and earthly particulars, which are necessary for living well in this world. Though the people of God share the highest good, that does not make any random selection of them mutually suitable for civil fellowship."

He believes the government should and ought to build churches, fund seminaries, suppress public blasphemy, heresy, or profanity, and enforce sabbath observance.

"Just as grace clarifies for sinful man his true end and supplies the means to attain it, Christianity completes the nation by ordering the law, customs, and social expectations to heavenly life."

The more I read, the more alarmed and deeply uncomfortable I become...

"A Christian people, who's good is found in cultural particularity can and must be for itself as a distinct people." (135)

"Blood relations remain relevant to Nations... blood relations matter for your ethnicity, because your kin have belonged to this people on this land..." (139)

"Since grace restores nature and natural law contains all the moral principles concerning social relations, the Gospel does not alter the priority and inequality of loves amongst those relations. A Christian should love his children over other children, his parents over other parents, his kin over other kin, his nation over other nations"

Brenden Wentworth Fair. I want both of those things to be true, without the liberalism that Moore proposes as a solution. I think it’s possible though and they aren’t automatically mutually exclusive.

Jonathan Mills Would you be able to post some primary sources where Ray Ortland and Russell Moore "celebrate the death of cultural Christianity?"

That is not something that I have seen from them either online, in articles, books or podcasts. I don't follow either closely online so I totally could have missed it. But I don't necessarily trust Wolfe to be a faithful witness to their viewpoints.

Jonathan Mills I have seen Moore strongly criticize American MAGA/right-wing (on his view political idolatrous Christians). But I would not consider that alone "celebrating the death of cultural Christianity."

I don't have that much of a dog in this fight, I am just a moderate appreciator of Moore and have loved every Ray Ortlund book I have read so I would just like to log the data point so to speak.

Hayden Mills He quotes from Moore in an article in Christianity Today in 2015 called is Christianity dying?

Here's a few quotes from that:

" Bible Belt near Christianity is teetering. I say let it fall."

"Rising rates of secularization, along with individualism, means those days are over and good riddance to them."

Hayden Mills He quotes Ray Ortlund saying " we should celebrate the decline of Bible Belt religion and call for churches to stand out with the beauty of gospel culture"

Jonathan Mills Hmmm. That seems scant evidence for the strength of his claim. Thanks for the sources.

Jonathan Mills It seems like as Protestants we should have a particular aversion to "cultural Christianity" in some of its forms considering our deep emphasis on being born again and conversion. Nominalism should be a warning sign, not an encouraging one. I might resonate with Moore and Ortlund depending on the context.
