Fascinating framing: 16th century England perceived by Europe as a failed state hijacked by heretical religious fanatics, rapacious pirates feeding on imperial shipping lanes, and constant executions of sovereigns - an ungovernable, un-negotiable nightmare polity, similar to contemporary Western descriptions of Iran or Somalia. + A poet's sneer that religious tolerance had "Amsterdamnified" the land - fantastic word!

Were the Druids even a thing at this point? - As far as I can tell the cool heresies in this period were mostly groups like the Diggers, Ranters, and Muggletonians which all framed themselves as True Christian sects despite being very very weird, since anything pagan-sounding would have probably just been a magnet for witch-hunters at this time.
