So, in the end I decided to DNF, and I went and read a chapter-by-chapter summary of the rest of the book, just to see how bad it was. Turns out - not as bad as I imagined it (I'll never underestimate the power of phobias again), and now that my main anxiety is solved I can continue reading.

I was already having trouble with the image of mosquito larvae in the coffee grounds. And then she had to go and reassure herself with the line "Nothing wriggled against my tongue."
It just occured to me that no matter how much I love Kingfisher's writing, and no matter how much I can even love her brand of horror, this book especially is a) not for reading before bed and b) not for people with slight entomophobia

My resilience was already severely chipped by repeating nightmare fuel ((view spoiler)), and now there are suggestions of a completely new horror ((view spoiler)), and any kind of tension leads to me having heart palpitations. I've been reading this for a month. It's a great story, but my heart can barely take it.
