TBH, I'm a bit bored. And I'm usually a big fan of non-linear storytelling.
Spoiler-prediction for what's actually going on:
None of this is happening! Following the events of the first book, Harrow uses all of her powers to revive Gideon. This leaves her exhausted to the point that she has to retreat into her bone cocoon for recovery. The messages she finds are Gideon trying to reach out and wake Harrow up!

I went all the way back to the start, I've been zoning out way too much to form a fair opinion.
New spoiler-prediction:
The 1st one was too convoluted... I think the reason the story is told in 2nd person is bc it's Gideon's POV. Why else do it in this scenario, other than to disguise the narrator's identity!?
I'll definitely come up with a better theory, now that I've pledged to pay attention.
