It feels like fate to have found this book in the time of my life that I did. I’ve been reading it whenever I feel homesick—which has been more often than not, recently. The woods, marshes, and shores of my childhood are characters in this book. I can see so clearly his descriptions, and they take me to some of the most joyful moments of my life.

Having grown up in this region, spending time in every season at my grandparents’ house on the waters of the Maryland side of the Potomac, reading the first 60 pages of this book has brought me such a peaceful and happy joy. Hunting for sea glass on the pebbled shore with my Nana, pulling up the crab crates from the creek with my Papa… Michener captures the land so beautifully and sincerely.
