Goshhhhhhh. I didn’t like Henry in the 2004 BBC miniseries but he is soooooo much worse in the book. Insufferable 🚨

At one point, Gaskell describes a woman’s marriage to the love of her life as “her affliction and downfall” simply because she’s poor and that might be the most melodramatic thing a Victorian woman has ever penned.

I feel as if I’m cheating on The Count of Monte Cristo by even thinking about picking up another book 😭
