Remus, a Leviathan, abducts Iris and claims her as his own, though she has no idea where they are, only that they are somewhere high above. When Iris attempts to escape, Remus punishes her by inflicting a needle-prick pain for an hour. Human servants, whose free will has been suppressed by inhibitors, bath and feed her for a week until she recovers from malnourishment. He gives Iris her first orgasm ever.

Before her dad succumbs to his injuries, they tries to call Iris's brother, but the calls keep going to his voicemail. Her dad's final words to Iris are to trust no one and to survive no matter what. 13 years later, Iris leads a group of girl survivors in the Blight, the outskirts of Leviathan territory. Malnourished and near death, they face starvation, so Iris ventures out into the dangerous forest to hunt.

The alien invasion begins while Iris and her parents are driving through the city. A massive spaceship hovers overhead, unleashing bombs that sparked mass hysteria. In the chaos, her mother is killed instantly when a car crashed into the side of their car. Her father manages to pull Iris from the wreckage, but he succumbs to his injuries shortly after tending to her broken arm. Iris is only 10 when it all happened.
