Found this chapter on the evolution of slangs, swears and insults particularly interesting. Having not really thought much about how language changes in an area in such a short period of time.
In addition that the usage/value of words can change by class. How the word ‘bloody’ went from being working class to upper class - it makes one think what modern words have undergone a similar process.

Chapter 22 “At this moment there are men with university degrees scrubbing dishes in Paris for ten or fifteen hours a day.” - interesting to think that back in the 1920s they had the same problems as today’s society
